Have you faced an error “File is too large for the destination file system” while transferring files from one hard disk to another? This happens because of the file system (FAT32) used to format your USB or storage device and because the file you are trying to copy or move is more than 4 GB. This article explains how you can fix this problem and recover lost data.

There are different solutions to this problem. Along with providing you with the most effective ones, we will also explain the reason for the error. So, before getting to the solutions, let’s first understand the file system on Windows, followed by the causes leading to the ‘File too large for destination file system’ error and its solutions.

What Is File System On Windows

The file system on Windows is a way to organize and manage files on storage devices like hard drives, SSDs, and USB drives. It determines how data is stored, retrieved, and organized. There are different file systems, and Windows primarily supports:

1. NTFS (New Technology File System) – This is the default file system for Windows. It supports large files, file permissions, encryption, and advanced features like journaling, which helps protect data integrity.

2. FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32) – An older file system widely compatible with various devices and operating systems. However, it has a file size limit of 4GB and doesn’t support file permissions or encryption.

3. exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) – Designed for flash drives and external storage, exFAT supports larger files and is more efficient than FAT32, making it a popular choice for SD cards and USB drives.

4. FAT (File Allocation Table 16)- It is an early file system developed by Microsoft with a maximum file size limit of 2 GB. It is still used in some embedded systems and devices that require simple file management.

What Causes “File Is Too Large For Destination File System” Error on Windows

Windows OS can be formatted with exFAT, FAT32, FAT, and NTFS file systems, each with its shortcomings. This is why when a storage device is formatted with the FAT32 file stem, you encounter the error “The file is too large for the destination file system” when –

  • Transferring data that is more than 4 GB in size.
  • The drive where the files are transferred uses the FAT32 file system.

Note : On a drive formatted with a FAT32 file system, you can store multiple files up to 2 TB in size, but a single file cannot be more than 4 GB. Also, a drive with a FAT16 file system limits this size to 2 GB. To fix this problem, you need to format the drive or storage device with the NTFS file system, as it supports files up to 16GB.

Now that the reason is clear let’s see how to fix this problem.

How To Fix “File Is Too Large for Destination File System” Error On Windows

Whether you are an advanced or beginner user, you can fix the error by following this step-by-step guide.

Method 1. Reduce the file size

This method is handy when moving or copying over 4 GB of data to any storage device. By reducing the file size by compressing it or dividing it into chunks, you can transfer data even when the file system is FAT32.

To compress file:

1. Run a zip utility software. If you don’t have one, you can download and install 7-zip.
2. Once installed, right-click the file you want to move or copy.
3. Select 7-zip > Add to archive.Add to archive

4. Choose Compression Level. This depends on the file size. Click Ok.
5. You will now have the compressed file.

Split the file

1. Run 7 Zip and add the file to the archive as we did in the earlier step.
2. Now, under the Split to volume, size option, click the down arrow to select the file size to split. You can either enter your desired size or use preset settings.
3. Click Ok to start the process. The file will now be divided into multiple files you can easily move or copy.

Method 2 – Format FAT32/FAT16 to NTFS Using The In-Built Windows Feature (For Free)

The second way to get rid of the error is to format FAT32 to NTFS. This process will erase all data on the drive. Therefore, use it only when you have data backup or the external hard drive or USB flash drive is empty. If you don’t have a backup, copy and paste them on another drive. Here are the steps:

1. Attach a USB drive or external hard disk to your PC.
2. Press Win + E to open the File Explorer window.
3. Locate and click on This PC.right click drive

4. Now, right-click on the drive you wish to convert and choose Format.

Format box

5. In the Format box, click the dropdown under File System and choose NTFS.
6. Click on the Start button and wait for the Format process to complete.

format my drive
7. The drive will now use the NTFS File System, which can support files of over 4GB in size.

Alternate Ways to Convert FAT32 to NTFS

Format USB or External Hard Drive to NTFS Using Disk Management

Tip : Before you follow these steps, ensure that the external hard drive is connected to the PC and readable.

1. In the Windows search bar, type Disk Management.
2. Right-click the connected storage drive > select Format.
3. Change the file system from FAT32 to NTFS and ensure Perform a quick format options is selected.

computer management windows
4. Click Ok to start the process.

Tip : This process might lead to data loss. To avoid this, you can use a partition manager or move data to an alternate storage device.

Use Partition Manager Software

If manually converting FAT32 to NTFS is challenging, you can use third-party partition manager tools. These tools help create partitions and fix file too large errors without requiring you to format the drive or face data loss.

Method 3. Upload Cloud Storage for file transfer

If the data stored on your FAT32 formatted device is valuable, transfer files to cloud storage before formatting your storage to NTFS. You can use Google Drive, One Drive, or any other cloud storage service to transfer and save files larger than 4 GB and avoid the “File Is Too Large For Destination File System.”

Google Drive is a commonly used cloud storage service that offers up to 15GB of data storage for free. If your drive is full or lacks space, you can clean it and manage your data

Editor’s Tip: Recover Lost Data Using Advanced File Recovery

If you are facing issues with lost or missing files on any storage device, try the Advanced File Recovery app. It is an excellent data recovery app that I personally use to recover accidentally deleted files, including images, documents, videos, audio files, and many more. This app can recover data from formatted or damaged hard disks, SD cards, and USB flash drives. What’s more, you can preview the file before you recover it. With support for over 1000 file types and different scan modes, this is the perfect solution for file recovery on your storage drives.

Have You Fixed The Error

Once you realize that “the file is too large for the destination file system” is due to the FAT32 file system, the solution is clear: You need to change the file system. If you’re using Windows’ built-in features or utilities to convert the file system, make sure to back up any files on the storage device first, as the process will erase the existing data. Please write about your thoughts in the comments section below.

In this post, let us discuss some working ways to help you resolve the error by opening folders on your computer. Also, we have listed a method that will help you recover your data from an inaccessible folder in case you have no option other than to remove the same.

So without further ado, let us begin!

Ways to Fix “Windows Cannot Open the Folder” Error on PC

Fix 1 – Try Another Way to Launch Explorer

Step 3 – Right-click on the process and click on Restart to relaunch the process and remove any glitches from the same.

Fix 3 – Clear File Explorer History

In case the issue has appeared recently, there are chances that the explorer has been hit by malware and has automatically locked itself. The file history is something that may have gone corrupt and hence you may not be able to access the same.

You can resolve this issue by clearing the file explorer history or cache. Here’s how you do it –

Step 1 – Go to the Start menu and search for File Explorer Options.

Step 2 – Open the same from the menu. A pop-up window will appear.

folder cannot open

Step 3 – You may see the Clear File Explorer History option right there under privacy options in the pop-up. Use the Clear button to remove it instantly.

cannot open folders on desktop windows 10

Fix 4 – Check the Page File Management and Set it to Auto

The page file is your virtual RAM that allows the processes to run smoothly when most of your physical RAM is occupied. Sometimes when this is limited to a set parameter of size and usage, it does not allow the added process to run smoothly. This may hamper your explorer experience and hence you might have come across the Windows Cannot open the folder you want to access.

The best way to handle this is by ensuring that the file sizing and management are set to auto. Here’s how you manage it –

Step 1 – Go to the Start Menu and search for Advanced System Settings. Open the option that matches and a pop-up window will appear.

cannot open folder windows 10

Step 2 – In the Pop-Up make sure in the Advanced Tab. Use the Settings button under Performance for further options.

cannot open folders in windows 10

Step 3 – In Performance Options, navigate to Advanced again to find Page file options.

Windows Cannot Open the Folder

Step 4 – Go to Change and ensure that the Automatically manage… option is enabled. In case you have ever customized these limits, set it to automatic and save the changes.

cannot start microsoft outlook the information store cannot be opened

Step 5 – Restart the system after configuring these settings. After the restart, you should be able to use your folder again and the folder won’t open error should be resolved.

Other than these fixes you also have the option to –

  • Check for Windows updates.
  • Reset your PC/ Install Fresh OS
  • Format Your PC and Remove all Data
  • Scan for Malware

However, one of the most crucial things to consider when doing any of these is that your data is still inaccessible. And when it is inaccessible you may end up losing it while formatting the PC or upgrading the OS. Not to mention, in case your PC is affected by Malware, you have no other option than to clear the data which eventually means losing it.

How to Keep Data Safe When the Folder Won’t Open?

Now, after performing the fixes if you are worried about data loss or there are missing files on your PC after you have resolved the Windows cannot open the folder issue, do not worry as we have a solution for that too.

In case any of your files have been deleted in the process, you can restore them using a data recovery application. Yes, it is possible to recover deleted/lost files on Windows. Thanks to Advanced Disk Recovery.

All you have to do is –

Step 1 – Download and Install the Advanced Disk Recovery Application on Your PC.

Step 2 – Select the drive from where your file has been lost or where exactly the Folder Won’t Open error appeared/

Advanced Disk Recovery_Welcome Screen

Scanning Process - Advanced Disk Recovery

Step 4 – Find the files that you want to recover. Select the folder where you want the recovered files to be saved.
Step 5 – Let the application run and finish the process of recovery.

If you are an Adobe After Effects user, you know how difficult things can get if the AEP file, especially if it contains a project, goes missing.

Such incidents usually occur when your PC is under duress, bothered by a virus, you forget to save a file, there is a sudden power cut, or the system crashes. If you have lost the AEP file, do not worry. Unlike other users who have tried recovering unsaved and deleted Adobe After Effects Project files by different means but have been unsuccessful, you will be successful.

Even though recovering AEP project files is not easy, we have ways and an amazing tool to help you restore them.

Click Here to jump to the recovery methods.

What are AEP Files? An Overview

After Effects Project (AEP) is primarily a video project linked with Adobe After Effects, VFX, motion graphics, and visual effects software that allows you to create motion graphics, add video effects to an existing clip, and edit special effects videos.

When you work on AEP project files, your project is in layers and assets, and the file is saved in binary format with the AEP extension.

AEP file properties

Because these files contain such important information, they become heavy in size. If you do not know about this, you might accidentally delete them, which can have adverse consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to keep these AEP files safe and learn ways to recover deleted or unsaved AEP files.

Ways to Recover AEP Files on Your PC

Irrespective of how you lost AEP files, whether you unknowingly deleted the After Effects Projects or lost them due to a malware attack, you can try a few tricks to recover them.

Important : As soon as you realize that you have lost a file, whether AEP or any other, we strongly recommend that you instantly stop using the PC because the more operations you perform, the more you reduce the chances of recovery.

Problem –

I forgot to save my After Effects Project and the PC restarted.

Solution –

Recover unsaved files using built-in features of Adobe After Effects.

Method 1 – Autosave Feature

Considering human errors, Adobe offers an auto-save feature that helps keep data intact despite a sudden system crash.

Note : If the feature is enabled, the file you forgot to save will be saved. Adobe After Effects keeps saving files at regular intervals.

Steps to Recover Unsaved File Via AutoSave

  1. Launch After Effects.
  2. You will see a dialogue box on the screen as the software opens. Click OK. If the autosave feature is enabled, After Effects will open a recovered version of your unsaved file.
  3. Go to File > Save As and save the recovered file.

If the file doesn’t open but you know the feature is enabled, follow the above steps to go to autosave settings. Here, you will find the auto-save folder path. Use it to navigate the folder to find the automatically saved AEP file.

Please open it and save it as a regular project file to prevent its loss again.

Auto-Save Folder Path in Adobe After Effects

Enable AutoSave

Here’s how to enable it. Check if it is enabled and get back your unsaved file.

Step 1 – Launch After Effects.
Step 2 – Go to Edit options in the top bar, and from the dropdown, select Preferences.

Adobe After Effects - Edit option

Step 3—The autosave option will be in the extended Preferences menu. Click on it.Auto save Option in Preferences Menu

Step 4 – Check the configuration for Autosave and manage them accordingly.
Step 5 – You can change the autosave interval to ensure no changes are left unsaved.

Method 2 –  Recover from After Effects Backup

If Autosave doesn’t work, you can recover the AEP file from the backup version of your AEP project.

Important : This method works if Autosave is enabled.

  1. Launch After Effects.
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences > Auto Save.
  3. Go to the path you see under Auto Save. You will now have two options: New Project or Custom Location.
  4. For us, the Next Project was auto-selected. We went to this folder and found and recovered the latest version of the AEP file.
    autosave-location-after-effects
  5. To avoid losing it, we saved it. Click the File menu > Save As.

Method 3 – Recover from Recent Files

Another way to retrieve unsaved After Effects projects is to use the Open Recent option. Whether you forgot to save the file or the system crashed before it was saved, you can try restoring it from recently opened files.

1. Click File menu > Open Recent > select the file you want to restore.

Recently opened AEP file_save2. The tool will open the last saved version.

Note : This option will only work if you have worked on the project recently. If some time has passed or you have worked on other projects, try other methods to restore the After Effects project.

Problem –

Neither the Auto Save, Backup, or Recent Files features are working. Also, the AEP file seems corrupted. Is there any other way to restore unsaved or corrupted After Effects project files?

Solution –

If Adobe features do not work, you can try Windows built-in features to restore AEP files. You can restore the AEP files from temporary files or use the File History or Previous Versions options if enabled.

Method 4 – Recover Using Temporary Files

Another interesting way to recover your After Effects Project is through temporary files. If you opened the project file recently but lost it, your RAM might store it in the temporary files folder. All you have to do is find the file and open it using After Effects.

Step 1 – Press Win+R to open the Run search.
Step 2 – In the Run search, use the command %temp% and hit enter. type temp command in run search bar

Step 3—The folder that opens contains all your temporary files. Do not be intimidated, as thousands of files may be in it.

Temporary files folder

Step 4—You will have to find your project file from these files manually. You can either check the names to find the file you are looking for or check the date and time of the file.

Step 5—If you find a file that is not in AEP format, drag it to After Effects to open it.

If the file does not open, you can manually add the .AEP extension, which is available, or you can use an online converter to change the format.

Method 5 – Restoring AEP file Via File History

Important : This method will only work if the feature is enabled.

  1. Press Windows + S > type File History.File History option
  2. If the option is enabled, you will see File History On, which means you can restore data.File History enabled
However, it is disabled, so you will need to enable it.File History Disabled
To enable the File History option:
Connect an external drive or a network drive. When that is done, click the Turn on option.
  3. As the File History option was enabled, your data is backed up. Go to the device on which the backup is stored > review available backups > look for AEP projects > select and restore them.Restore AEP_File History

Method 6 – Restore Through Previous Versions

Important : This method overwrites the current version and restores a backup of the Previous Version.

  1. Go to the project folder > Properties > Previous Version tab.
  2. You will now be able to see the dates of the previous version of the folder.
  3. Click selected version > preview it > Once you are sure you want it, click the Restore button.Previous Version
  4. Confirm the action. You will now have the previous version of AEP file restored.

Problem –

I accidentally deleted the After Effects project, and it is not in the Recycle Bin, nor do I have a backup. Is there a way to get it back?

Solution –

Third-party recovery tools like Advanced Disk Recovery come in handy in such situations. The tool helps recover even permanently deleted data.

Step 7—Wait for Advanced Disk Recovery to restore the file. When done, you will get a message with details about the number of files restored, deleted files found, scanned, and the total remaining.

The system cannot find the files specified is an internal error that appears under different conditions and situations. You may encounter this error while trying to launch an application lying at a specific path, running a command prompt, installing drivers, and so on. The issue refers to the error code 0x80070002, which can be tricky to fix.

Usually, when one of the crucial files required to facilitate a process is missing, the chain of processes is broken, and the system cannot find the file-specified error. The ultimate solution to this is to reinstate the unavailable file. In case the file has been deleted or removed by a security program, you should try to recover it.

In this post, we will examine some of the ways you can get rid of the error.

3 Ways to Fix the System Cannot Find The File Specified

Fix 1 – Use CHKDSK Command On Your PC

One of the most common reasons for this error is that the drive often becomes corrupt and inaccessible. This means any file or application in that particular drive will become corrupted or appear lost. Hence, as soon as you initiate a process to fetch those files, the system may not find the specified file error on your PC.

The best way to handle this is by cleaning the drive in question. Thanks to the CHKDSK command, you can do it in just a few steps –

Step 1 – Launch the command prompt on your PC.
Step 2 – In the command prompt, use the following command –

 chkdsk x: /f /r where x denotes your drive.

Step 3—Hit enter after the command and let it finish the process. This way, the PC will check your drive for errors and resolve them simultaneously.

All your data is now cleaned. You can now try to initiate the same process again, but only this time, the error will not appear. If it appears again, chances are that the CHKDSK command has removed the corrupted file necessary for the process.

In such a situation, there are only two things you can try  –

  • Find the exact file online and save it again at the same destination
  • Recover the file on your PC and restore it to the original file.

While it seems that finding a file and placing it on the drive is easier than recovering a lost file, the opposite is true. You may not be able to get your hands on the same file, considering its conditioning and use case. However, you can recover the file using a data recovery application like Advanced File Recovery.

All you have to do is –

  • Download the application and install it on your computer.
  • Launch the app and specify the type of file you have lost. If not, you can select all files to recover.select data type which you want to recover- Advanced File Recovery
  • Let the application find the deleted file. Check the results once you find the file, select it, and specify the destination where you want to recover it.
  • Once you’ve completed everything, allow the app to recover the file, and you’re good to go.

This way, your drive will be fixed for errors, and the deleted files will be recovered instantly.

Fix 2 – Run a Malware Scan Using Windows Security

If you have manually checked and the file is available, but the process keeps giving you back the file, the system cannot find the file specified error, and chances are that malware is causing the error. The best way to handle this is by using Windows Security on your PC and running a malware scan.

Step 1 – Go to the start menu and search for Windows security.

search for Windows Security

Step 2 – Launch the app and click on Virus and Threat Protection. Manage Settings option in virus and threat protection

Step 3 – Use the Quick Scan option to initiate the scan.

quick scan

Step 4 – Once the scan is over, restart your PC for any changes to take effect.
Step 5 – Try launching the process again.

If a virus or malware is detected, it will be resolved, and the error system cannot find the file specified and will not appear again. However, the chances of that are quite low, considering the issue usually appears when the file is inaccessible. Hopefully, the malware detected will be removed using Windows security, and the file will become accessible again. If it does not work, you can go for a third-party security suite with multiple shields to guard against such impacts of malware and other malicious files.

Fix 3 – Install Windows Updates

In case the issue has appeared while you were trying to restore using a backup or creating a backup, there are chances that the outdated nature of your OS is causing it< When there is a new version of Windows available to install, the files are automatically updated to work with the latest version. Hence while working with an older version, issues such as the system cannot find the file specified error may appear.

Ideally, you should update your PC regularly. The auto-update feature should do it when you restart or boot your PC. However, in case you have that turned off, simply follow these steps –

Step 1 – Press Win+I to open the system settings.open system setting

Step 2 – From the left pane, select Windows Update.
Step 3 – Click on Check for Updates. This allows the system to fetch the latest updates if available.

Click on Check for updates

Step 4 – Click on the Download and Install button when it shows that the update is available.
Step 5 – The PC will restart and update your PC with the latest version of the OS.

After updating the PC successfully, the incompatibility should be resolved, and hence, the error should be resolved.

Other than these fixes, you can also try removing the application/process that is showing the error and reinstalling it. Sometimes, when you download an app from a website, the files are not properly downloaded, and hence, a missing file or cannot find the file specified error appears.

The error appears differently depending on the situations that present themselves. However, the most common issue is that the file is either corrupted or lost from the PC. Fix 1 and Advanced File Recovery are your best options to fix the error once and for all.

I hope these fixes and the steps help you get rid of the error. Whenever you come across any error on Windows, keep in mind that it is fixable.
