A Power Surge on USB Port error typically occurs when a USB device attempts to draw more power than the USB port can safely provide, leading to a “power surge” warning from the operating system. USB ports are designed to supply a certain amount of power to connected devices, but if a device tries to pull more power than the port can handle, it can trigger this error.

Symptoms – ( The effects of a power surge on the USB port )

  • A notification from Windows indicating a pop-up of a power surge on a specific USB port.
  • USB devices connected to the affected port may not work or disconnect intermittently.
  • The system may freeze or experience other performance issues.

power surge on usb port error

Why USB Port Does not Have Enough Power

This issue can arise for several reasons, such as:

1. Overloading the USB Port: If too many high-power devices are connected to a single USB port or hub or a single device draws more power than the port’s rating, it can cause a surge.
2. Faulty or Damaged USB Devices: A malfunctioning USB device may attempt to draw more power than necessary, triggering the power surge error.
3. Faulty USB Port: A physical issue with the USB port, such as a short circuit, can cause an overload.
4. Outdated or Corrupted Drivers: Incorrect or outdated drivers can cause the computer to mismanage power distribution to USB ports, leading to errors.
5. USB Hub Issues: A USB hub could be faulty or underpowered, causing surges if devices require more power than the hub can supply.

Expert Recommended Methods: Fix Power Surge On USB Port On Windows

Here are some steps to fix the issue:

Method 1. Unplug All USB Devices

1. Unplug all USB devices connected to your PC, including external drives, printers, etc.
2. Restart your computer. After it boots up, reconnect the USB devices one by one to see if the issue persists.
3. Inspect the affected USB port for any visible damage or debris.
4. If the port is damaged, you may need to have it repaired by a professional or use a different port.

Method 2. Activate Hardware Troubleshooter

The built-in Hardware Troubleshooter in Windows can help resolve the issue. Here’s how to use it in Windows 10:

1. Search for “CMD” in the taskbar’s search box. When the Command Prompt is visible in the search result, right-click on it and select “Run as administrator” to open it.
2. In the “Command Prompt,” type the following command: msdt.exe/id devicediagnostic and press Enter on your keyboard.
3. In the popup window that appears, click Next to begin diagnosing and troubleshooting the issue.

Method 5. Check for Overloading of USB Ports

usb 3.0 and usb 2.0

If you are using a USB hub, try connecting devices directly to the computer’s USB ports to see if the issue is with the hub. Avoid connecting high-power devices to USB 2.0 ports, as they supply less power than USB 3.0 ports.

Method 6. Reset the USB Port’s Power Supply

1. Shut down your computer.
2. Unplug the power cable and any connected USB devices.
3. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
4. Plug everything back in and restart your computer.

Method 7. Check for Malware

Run a malware scan to ensure that no malicious software is causing the issue. Use Windows Security or another trusted antivirus program.

Method 8. Update Your BIOS/UEFI

Sometimes, USB issues are related to outdated system firmware. Check your motherboard or laptop manufacturer’s website for BIOS/UEFI updates. Follow their instructions carefully to update the BIOS/UEFI.

Method 9. Try a Different USB Cable or Device

A faulty USB cable or device could be causing the error. Test with a different cable or USB device to see if that resolves the problem.

Method 10. Reset the CMOS

In some cases, resetting the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) can help. This resets your computer’s hardware settings and may resolve conflicts causing the error. Consult your computer’s manual for instructions on how to reset the CMOS.

Have You Fixed The Error

You might need to invest in a powered USB hub if the error persists. These external hubs enable you to connect high-power devices to your PC’s USB ports safely, as long as the hub is separately powered, helping to protect your USB ports from potential damage. If none of the above steps work, the USB controller on your motherboard could be faulty, and in that case, you may need to consult a technician.

A device attached to the system is not functioning, a frustrating error that users encounter while using an external device with a PC. Think of it this way: you have collected all the episodes of your favorite series to watch in a Pendrive, and when you finally connect it to the PC, the Pendrive does not show. Instead, you encounter the “A device attached to the system is not functioning” error prompt. Isn’t that frustrating?

The error usually appears due to incompatibility of the connected device. The reason behind it can be as simple as a connection glitch and as complicated as using an outdated driver. In both cases, you must know the proper troubleshooting methods or the error might keep returning and bothering your experience.

Keep on reading, as in this post. We will help you with simple troubleshooting methods to help you fix the error. Without further ado, let’s get started!

Ways to Fix “A Device Attached to the System is not Functioning” Error

The first thing that you should do is check for connectivity errors. Usually, loose connections and malfunctioning cables are the most common causes of the device not functioning error on Windows. In case you have come across the issue, try the following preliminary steps –

  • Disconnect the device and reconnect it to another port on the PC. This will confirm whether the issue lies with the port or device.
  • Check that you are using an original and supported cable, as it also affects the device’s compatibility.
  • Ensure proper permissions are granted to the device. For instance, if you are trying to connect an Android or iOS device to transfer photos, ensure that you have allowed connection via the device and that they are in the correct mode of connection.

After checking the above factor, if you still cannot access the device or the attached device is not functioning properly, jump to the fixes listed below and try them.

Fix 1 – Update Windows to Latest Build

Whether using Windows 10 or 11, you always get regular security patches and build updates. Ensure that while trying to use an external device, your PC is up to date with the latest updates. Otherwise, you may encounter incompatibility issues, such as the error “A device attached to the system is not functioning.”

Step 1 – Press the Win+I key combination on your keyboard to open system settings. Windows Update selected in system settings

Step 2 – From the left pane in the opened Window, select and navigate to Windows Update.

Check For Updates
Step 3 – Click the Check for Updates button in the Update option to refresh the available updates.
Step 4 – If any update is available, click Download and install.

Download and Install Updates

Step 5 – Once the update is downloaded, install it and restart your PC for it to take effect.

Reconnect the device to check if the error message is resolved or not. Try moving files between the devices to ensure that the error is no longer returning on the device.

Fix 2 – Update USB Controller Drivers

If you have tried connecting the device to another PC and it works fine, there is a high chance that your PC is using outdated USB controller drivers. These drivers are responsible for connecting with another device using a USB port. These drivers are necessary for your USB ports to become useful. Hence, we recommend you keep them up to date.

But how? Well, there is no dedicated functionality in Windows that highlights that the drivers need to be updated. It is when you encounter errors such as the device attached to the system is not functioning. Hence, the ideal way to use a dedicated application that finishes the updates regularly.

We recommend you use Advanced Driver Updater to get the job done. It works in 3 easy steps –

Step 1 – Download and install the app on your PC.

Step 2 – Launch the app and click on Start Scan Now. This will start a scan to find outdated drivers on the PC.

Start Scan Now
Step 3 – Once you have a list of drivers to be updated, check if it has a USB controller or device drivers for your connection.

After spotting the drivers, click Update All, and you should be ready.

Fix 3 – Use DISM and SFC Commands to Resolve System Errors

If all the issues mentioned above are fine, but the device still disconnects the connected devices, you may face corrupt system file issues. The best way to handle that is by using system commands to resolve the error.

Step 1 – Go to the Start Menu and launch Command Prompt as administrator.Command Prompt_Admin

Step 2 – Use the following commands one after the other in the command prompt. (Press Enter after every command)

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

sfc /scannow

Step 3 – Exit the command prompt once all the commands have run successfully.

Restart your computer to allow changes to take effect. After restarting, try connecting the device and moving files to see if the device attached to the system is malfunctioning. It may not appear as if you have successfully troubleshooted the error.

Other than these fixes, giving your PC an instant restart or resetting it to factory defaults can help you. The error can be quite bothersome as it disturbs the process of copying files. However, it is mild and can be easily resolved. Try these fixes, and you should be good to go.

Safely ejecting USB mass storage is a habit that can save you from several uninvited errors. When you connect a storage device to your PC, it engages in the system memories, and hence it is always active and in use. It can ruin a drive if you eject it abruptly. It affects the USB drive’s ability to engage with the driver and slows the read and write speed over time. But what will you do if the safe ejecting program starts showing the Problem Ejecting Mass Storage Device Error?

The error often appears when you are trying to use the safe eject option from the icon tray in the taskbar. Though the error has a description that states that the drive is in use, that is not always the case that triggers the error.

So why does this error appear? More importantly, is there a way to resolve the “Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device” error on Windows? Let’s find out!

What Causes the Error in Ejecting a USB Storage Device on a PC?

The very first and obvious reason is mentioned in the error prompt itself.

It says, “This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows using the device and then try again.”

Hence, you should go and check whether a window or a tool is opened using the USB storage device you want to eject. If yes, simply close it and try again. However, there are other reasons that cause the issue.

Some other errors that cause the problem with ejecting USB devices on your PC are –

  • The USB files are engaged with a Windows process in the background.
  • A Virus/Malware is affecting the functionality of safe ejection on your PC.
  • A system/USB driver is acting up.
  • The USB File System is Not Supported.

Either way, you will find it difficult to get the safe ejection to work. Also, the fact that your USB is plugged in and active will not allow you to remove it abruptly, as it may cause damage to the files that it holds.

It only makes sense to resolve the error first and then eject the USB, as it can become a severe issue if not resolved with time. Check out the next section to find fixes and workarounds for the problem of ejecting a USB mass storage device error on a Windows PC.

If all your processes are done, and you are ready to eject your device, but the safe eject is not working, shut down your PC and remove the USB storage device. You see, the only thing bothering your ejection is the engagement of the device with the PC. After shutting the PC down, the power is taken off from the USB storage device; hence, it is safe to eject it on your own. shut down option

If you have other processes running in the background, you can try logging off and putting the PC to sleep instead of shutting it down, as it may keep your background processes intact.

Fix 4 – Update the Drivers on Your PC

System drivers are of the essence here. Anything connected to the PC interacts with the drivers; hence, if they are improper, you may face issues similar to the Problem of ejecting USB storage devices error.

The easiest way to keep all your drivers updated regularly is by using the Advanced Driver Updater. Sure, you can update drivers on PC manually, but who has hours to spend on a task that can be completed in minutes?

With Advanced Driver Updater, you can get rid of outdated driver issues in just a few steps –

Step 1 – Download the tool on your PC.

Step 2 – Use the tool to run a scan and highlight all the outdated drivers.

Start Scan Now

Action cameras have become the go-to devices for content creators and vloggers. When we talk about action cameras, the first name that comes to mind is GoPro. These small but powerful cameras are rugged and created to withstand all sorts of conditions and provide high-quality footage. You might have seen moto-vloggers, professional adventure sports players, etc, using these cameras. The best part is that these cameras can be mounted on helmets and any surface to record, making them the best for any situation.

While GoPro cameras know how to do the job on the field, the PC often struggles to recognize it. This makes the process difficult for the users, as the PC cannot identify the device. There can be several reasons your PC cannot detect the connected GoPro device.

Wondering what to do if GoPro is not showing up on PC? Let’s find out!

Why is GoPro Not Detected on PC

There can be several reasons your GoPro is not recognized by the PC. Usually, when you connect your camera, it is for data transfers. This means the PC treats it as a storage device that it can use to transfer data to and from. You may have observed that sometimes, a PC is unable to detect connected pen drives and storage devices. The situation can be somewhat similar here.

Some of the most commonly known reasons why your GoPro is not showing up on your PC are –

  • Connectivity Errors
  • Hardware Issues
  • USB Controller Driver Error
  • Corrupt SD Card in Use
  • GoPro is Not Working

Knowing all these possibilities, you may be required to fix several things while troubleshooting the undetected GoPro. Fortunately, in this post, we have curated many fixes you can try. The list is harmless as you can try these fixes, and if it was the issue, it will be resolved, as you can move on to the next. Shall we begin the troubleshooting?

Working Ways to Fix GoPro Not Detected Issue on PC

Before starting with all the fixes below, ensure that you have updated your PC to the latest OS update and restarted your device to remove any glitches that may have occurred temporarily. Also, ensure that you have restarted the GoPro, as the error may also lie in the device.

Fix 1 – Ensure that the Connection Between GoPro and PC is Solid

It is crucial to identify that the connection between your GoPro and PC is proper. While connecting your camera to the PC for transferring data, make sure that the following things are checked and found OK –

  1. Check that the cable you are using is original and supports the generation of GoPro you are using.
  2. Ensure that the cable is not loose and that there are no cuts and tears on it, as it may affect the connection.
  3. Check the Port and ensure that it is intact. A USB port has pins that are often destroyed while connecting multiple devices.
  4. Check for other common errors such as dust, loose connections, etc.
  5. If the error is not resolved, try swapping the cable in use. Also, to confirm the issue, you can use the same cable and camera and connect it to another PC.

With this check and resolutions, you can fix the connection issue between your PC and GoPro. In case all these checks are passed, and the PC is still unable to detect the GoPro, do not panic and move on to the next fix.

Fix 2 – Update USB Controller Drivers

When it comes to connecting external devices on a PC, drivers play a key role. If you are using an older device and have all your updates turned off, chances are that the outdated USB controller drivers have caused the issue. Updating these drivers can resolve the majority of your errors.

If you know how to update the drivers manually, try the method. However, if not, we have a better way to help you! Simply follow these steps –

Step 1 – Download the Advanced Driver Updater.

After updating the device and USB controller drivers, we recommend you restart your PC and try connecting the device again. However, if it is still undetected, the issue might not be with the device but with its SD card. You can easily check if that is the case by swapping the current SD card with a new one and connecting the same GoPro with the PC.

If the new SD card is detected, your existing SD card may be corrupted. In that scenario, we advise you to use a dedicated SD card reader and connect it to your PC for recovery.

PRO TIP – If you are on Windows 10, use the Hardware Troubleshooter on your PC. Simply –

Step 1 – Open the Run search using the Win+R command on the keyboard.
Step 2 – In the Run search, use the command msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic.
use DeviceDiagnostic command

If you are facing a problem with a USB connection or when you plug in a USB and get the message “USB device not recognized,” you are at the right place. In this post, we will discuss how to fix this issue and how to stop your laptop or tablet battery from draining. Recently, many users have reported facing these issues, and in most cases, the problem is caused by Windows: USB Selective Suspend. If, like others, you too are wondering what this feature is? And can you disable it? Keep reading. We will answer these questions and will explain how to disable it so that you avoid facing USB connection-related issues.

What is a USB Selective Suspend

It is a built-in feature in Windows that allows the hub driver to suspend an individual port without affecting other connected USB ports. The service comes in handy for laptop users as it helps save battery.

USB devices like printers, scanners, headphones, etc, are not always active but still consume power. Therefore, to prevent unnecessary power consumption, Windows uses this feature to put unused USB devices into a low-power state automatically. That said, when the USB is suspended, the external devices are put into an idle state so that charging power can be saved, and you don’t need to charge the laptop frequently. However, this feature works when the USB is connected and your system has the recent USB drivers running. (If you want to know whether or not your PC has the latest USB drivers, try Advanced Driver Updater.)

What is the Use of this Feature

When you connect a device via USB and the port is active, the data transfer schedule for that port is active, and the system’s physical memory is used, which means there is power consumption, and the CPU cannot go into sleep or hibernate. Therefore, the unused USB ports should be suspended to let Windows hibernate or go to sleep.

For those who work on a laptop or tablet, this feature is a boon as they can save battery without affecting the working of other connected devices. However, the feature can sometimes trigger problems, like random disconnection of USB ports, unrecognized USB devices, and others. Hence, disabling selective USB suspension settings is suggested when you face such issues.

How to Disable the USB Selective Suspend Feature on Windows 11 and 10

If you frequently encounter a USB device not recognized, use a laptop with the charger plugged in, or require a laptop to always run on a maximum charge with a USB connection, you should turn off this feature. To do so, follow these steps:
